Rewiring Mental Health from the Inside Out with Metabolic Psychiatry

What if the root cause of your anxiety, brain fog, or ADHD isn’t all in your mind—but also in your metabolism? What if the reason you’re not feeling better—despite doing all the things like journaling, meditating, and going to therapy—is because of something happening inside your cells? Today we’re talking about an emerging field in mind and energy psychiatry—called Metabolic Psychiatry.

In a recent episode of the Love, Happiness & Success podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Bret Scher, a cardiologist and the director of Metabolic Mind, about the field of Metabolic Psychiatry. This mind and energy psychiatry is revolutionizing our understanding of mental health, not by focusing on thoughts and feelings alone, but by looking at what fuels the brain: energy.

What Is Mind and Energy Psychiatry?

Metabolic Psychiatry (mind and energy psychiatry) connects mental health conditions with metabolic function—especially the brain’s ability to produce and utilize energy. Our brains are incredibly energy-intensive organs. When they don’t get the fuel they need, or when that fuel isn’t processed properly due to insulin resistance or metabolic dysfunction, the result can look like cognitive and emotional disorders: ADHD, anxiety, depression, even schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.

One of the foundational tools in this new field is ketogenic therapy. Unlike the trendy “bacon-and-butter” version of keto you might’ve seen on Instagram, therapeutic ketosis is about intentionally shifting your body’s fuel source from glucose to fat in order to produce ketones—an alternative energy source that the brain can use more efficiently when glucose metabolism is impaired.

The Science Behind the Shift

Ketogenic diets have been used for over a century to treat neurological conditions like epilepsy. That’s right—back in the early 1900s, doctors discovered that reducing carbohydrate intake could reduce seizures. Fast forward a hundred years, and we’re realizing that these same mechanisms might apply to mental health disorders.

Here’s what we know so far:

Early research and case studies have shown potential benefits of ketogenic therapy for conditions like ADHD, PTSD, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and even autism spectrum disorders.

It’s Not Just for “Serious” Diagnoses

I’ll be honest with you—I’ve experimented with keto myself. As someone who manages an ADHD diagnosis, I noticed a significant improvement in my ability to focus and think clearly when I started eating low-carb. And I’m not alone. Many people report that ketogenic diets help with brain fog, focus, mood, and emotional regulation—even if they don’t have a formal diagnosis.

When your brain is better fueled, it works better. Simple as that.

Getting Started with Ketogenic Therapy

If you’re considering exploring metabolic interventions for mental health, here are some key points Dr. Scher shared:

  • Ketogenic diet ≠ ketogenic therapy. A diet is a general approach. Therapy involves setting specific ketone goals, tracking levels, and using ketosis as a medical intervention.
  • Ketogenic diets typically involve eating fewer than 30 grams of carbs per day—a huge contrast from the 250–300 grams in a standard Western diet.
  • Common keto foods include eggs, avocados, meats, low-carb veggies, nuts, and healthy fats like olive oil.
  • It’s important to work with a clinician if you’re using ketosis to manage a medical or psychiatric condition. Medication levels may need to be adjusted, and there can be interactions.
  • Therapy and medication still matter. This isn’t an either/or—it’s a both/and approach.

Why Isn’t This Common Knowledge?

You’d think this would be front-page news, right? But most physicians and therapists were never trained in metabolic therapy. Many still believe outdated ideas about cholesterol and fat, and confuse therapeutic ketogenic diets with unhealthy, high-fat junk food meals.

But as research mounts and more stories come in this science is gaining the attention it deserves.
